Whether swing arm lamps or mosaic lamps each lamp style has its pros and cons and many are designed to serve specific functions. So how do you choose a lamp that will provide the aesthetic contribution you're after while making sure it also plays nice with the rest of your decor?
In this post the team at Paykoc Imports take a close look at six different lamp styles and how you can successfully incorporate them into your home. Let's get started.
Turkish Mosaic Lamps
Today's Turkish lamps can trace their origins to the workshops of the Byzantine Empire. It was there that the idea of employing traditional mosaic techniques to create compelling oil lamps first found expression.

Buffet Lamps
The buffet lamp is typically tall and slender and stands more than 32 inches tall. In essence, they are a taller version of the table lamp and were designed to provide light to buffet tables without getting in the way of people filling their plates.
Interior designers like the buffet lamp because of its slender, unobtrusive shape and high vantage point from which it directs light downward. As such you will sometimes find it on kitchen tables and counters and in home offices where it will provide plenty of light while staying out of your way while you work at your desk.
On the whole, the buffet lamp should be used to provide filler light, not as a primary source of illumination for an entire room.
Tripod Lamps
As the name suggests a tripod lamp has a 3-legged base and is a floor lamp that is often found in homes featuring more contemporary decor. The tripod lamp can be found in living rooms, especially next to sofas, and in corners where they provide a subtle accent to the room's lighting scheme.
Tripod lamps typically have a modern or, in some cases, an industrial look that makes them somewhat ill-suited for older, more traditional homes. But with the right base material and the right lampshade designers have been able to employ them to stunning effect in some traditional settings.
Although they are primarily living room accessories you will also on occasion find tripod lamps in the bedroom where they are typically used to provide light for reading in bed. Because of their wide 3-legged base, you have to be careful to place them away from where people walk, however, lest someone trip and fall and take the lamp with them.
Swing Arm Lamps
Swing arm lamps typically have one joint halfway or so between their base and the lampshade. But that's not to say they're all the same. Not by a longshot. Swing arm lamps come in an incredible variety of styles, colors, and materials and can be table lamps or wall lamps. Although in their most popular incarnation, they are the classic contemporary desk lamp.
Wall-mounted swing arm lamps are often found next to beds and are usually made of materials such as brass, bronze, or pewter. And you may occasionally see them in kitchens, extending out over countertops. The big advantage of this type of lamp over a standard table lamp is that you can fold it or swing it out of the way when you need space.
Like the other lamps we've already looked at, the swing arm lamp is not intended to light an entire room. Only to bring light to bear on a specific place; be that the head of the bed, the desktop, or a portion of a countertop.
Torchiere Floor Lamps
The torchiere floor lamp provides upward light that reflects off the ceiling and is capable of illuminating a modest-sized room. You will find torchiere lamps in a significant percentage of homes these days and it doesn't really matter the architectural style of the home.
Their simplicity – a flat, round or square base, a tall stem approximately 6' in length that may be plain or ornate, and an upward-facing glass lampshade – enables them to meld with just about any decor. As we mentioned the stem may be ultra-simple or it may be quite ornate and the same is true for the glass lampshade. There are even torchiere lamps with Tiffany-style shades.
For those seeking an alternative to central overhead lighting, the torchiere floor lamp is often the perfect choice. As we mentioned they are capable of acting as the sole source of light in a room, and when you have a dimmer installed they can create an atmosphere that is as bright or moody as you desire.
Tree Lamps
The tree lamp is a significant departure from your ordinary house lamp. Some are crafted from metal or resin and made to resemble tree branches. Others are actual tree branches that have been cleaned up and fitted with numerous lights.
Since many tree lamps are made from real tree branches (albeit small ones) it is easy to find one that is entirely unique. What people love about them, besides their eco-friendly overtones, is that they provide the ability to send light off in a variety of directions.
Tree lamps have been used successfully in every type of room (except perhaps the bathroom) but you will need an interior designer who knows what they're doing to figure out a way to make this type of lamp seem like it belongs with the rest of your decor.
