Wholesale Nimet Porcelain Coasters from Paykoc

Nimet Varli is one of the most renowned ceramicists in all of Turkey. And when you consider the history and diversity of the Turkish ceramic and porcelain tradition, that’s saying something. Nimet’s stunning handicrafts first came to prominence during the 1990s. And in 2002 the Turkish government recognized her as the Turkish Artist of the Year. At Paykoc Imports, we were among the first in the US to offer breathtaking Nimet Porcelain to the public. It’s been one of our most popular items for years and that trend shows no signs of letting up. Unbeknownst to some of our customers, however, we not only offer wholesale Nimet porcelain bowls, plates, mugs and figurines but wholesale Nimet porcelain coasters as well.

What Sets Nimet Coasters Apart

There are lots of companies that make and sell coasters. Some are nothing more than glorified paper napkins. Others may use cork or wicker or some other similar material. And then there are Nimet porcelain coasters. Every piece of porcelain that emerges from the Nimet workshop is a one-of-a-kind item that is handcrafted, hand-painted, hand sealed and fired in a traditional kiln. The Nimet workshop is not only the source of some of the most beautiful porcelain creations you'll find anywhere, it's also a 'fair-trade' workshop operated exclusively by Turkish women. Each and every woman who works in the Nimet factory undergoes a lengthy apprenticeship during which they learn and master all aspects of the ceramicist’s art. That means those Nimet coasters your holiday guests or restaurant patrons are setting their cup or glass on are more than just devices to prevent rings on your table or counter, they’re timeless expressions of a handicraft tradition dating back centuries.

About That Handicraft Tradition

A lot of countries claim to have a tradition of handicrafts. And some actually do. But even among those countries that can lay claim to a tradition of handcrafted items, Turkey stands alone. The Turkish handicraft tradition dates back thousands of years to the Bronze Age when artisans in that part of the world were setting the standard for metallurgy. The tradition of handcrafted items continued to flourish during the more than 1,000 years of the Byzantine Empire and into the Ottoman period. It was during this era that the nature-based iconography from which Nimet draws much of her inspiration first came to prominence. You can see her love of nature and bask in her embrace of bold yet tasteful color when you purchase wholesale porcelain coasters for your home, tavern, lodge or restaurant.

They’re Not Just Wholesale Nimet Porcelain Coasters, They’re Works of Art

Before we go any further let’s take a quick look at the history of the coaster. Originally called ‘beer mats’ the first coasters specifically designed to place under your sweaty glass, mug or cup appeared in about 1880 in Germany. They were the product of an enterprising gentleman named Friedrich Horn. Horn’s beer mats were made of cardboard and so didn’t last very long. But just a few years later another German named Robert Sputh came up with a heartier beer mat that used wood pulp at its center. (It should be noted, however, that no one is really sure where the name ‘coaster’ came from.) Sputh’s more robust beer mat took off and inspired countless others to enter the beer mat market. But while the good people of Northern Europe can be credited with inventing the coaster, none of them can compete with Nimet when it comes to elevating the coaster to honest-to-goodness decor item.
